El Galpon del Glaciar

Only 20 km from El Calafate, on the way to the Glaciar Perito Moreno, in an old and traditional Patagonia homestead, lies El Galpon (The shearing shed). The lodge has 16 comfortable rooms with a view to the lake or to the magnificent Andes Mountain Range and is the perfect hotel choice on your Patagonia tour. The farm owns 3.5 km of Lake Argentino shore and 1,5 km of the river Centinela. Within the property, you may practice diverse nature-related activities.

Excursions
A wonderful personal welcome awaits guests at the hotel restaurant with delicious homemade jams, cookies, scones and bread, and hot tea or coffee. The adventure starts at the antique sheep shearing shed, where a walking tour takes you through trekking paths leading to the lagoon "Laguna de los Pajaros" and the lake "Lago Argentino". The expedition to the nature reserve includes birdwatching over 40 migrating species that visit us from the beginning of spring and often nest in the reserve by the lagoon. The tour continues to the ancient Indian camping ground, where archeologists from the University of La Plata have been excavating and studying their culture.

It is hard to imagine this trip without watching the Kelpie dogs mustering the flock from their pastures to the shearing shed. There, you will see how sheep are shorn and how wool is baled. The tour ends with a delicious patagonic lamb barbecue, fresh salads and homemade desserts at our cozy restaurant with a magnificent view over the "Lago Argentino" and the "Cordillera de Los Andes".

Birdwatching is especially spectacular throughout the grounds, and you may also ask to arrange a mountain bike ride, horseback ride, or a trip in a carriage. All of these activities are included with a 3-day or longer stay.
