The Unmatched Experience of Small Expedition Ships
Working with travelers to plan Antarctic voyages over the years, I have learned that choosing the right vessel for your Antarctic adventure can truly make all the difference in your experience. While larger cruise ships may offer more luxury and amenities on board, a small expedition-style ship will always be the intimate and immersive experience that the Antarctic landscapes and wildlife deserve. I was so excited to be able to introduce my husband to Antarctica aboard Poseidon's ship, the Sea Spirit for this reason. While the capacity is just over 130 people, Poseidon rarely accepts more than 100 passengers on any of their voyages. Our trip was no exception, topping out at 94 guests in total.
Small ships, by nature, create a unique community and environment on board, one that I like to say feels a bit like adult summer camp. On day one as you embark your ship as a group of strangers, excited, full of anticipation, a little nervous about the Drake Passage, but ready to get out to sea and on with the adventure. By the end of your trip, this same group of strangers has become a group of friends, bonded by all of your incredible experiences, meals shared together, and likely a karaoke night or two. More on this later..
There are a few more reasons why a small expedition ship is the best way to visit the Antarctic Peninsula, providing adventurers with unparalleled experiences, beyond the bonds of a new community of likeminded travelers. I will dive into these a bit more throughout my posts as I outline our adventure, but in a quick snapshot, here is why a small ship like the Sea Spirit will provide a unique adventure:
Close Encounters with Nature:
A small expedition ship, with its limited passenger capacity, allows for a more intimate and personal connection with the Antarctic environment. Unlike larger vessels, these ships can access smaller and more remote locations, bringing travelers closer to the breathtaking landscapes, wildlife in their undisturbed natural habitat, and scientific research stations. This intimacy fosters a deeper appreciation for the pristine wilderness and a more profound understanding of the delicate ecosystem that makes Antarctica truly unique.
No Two Trips are the Same:
The unpredictable weather conditions and shifting ice patterns of Antarctica demand flexibility in travel plans. Small expedition ships, like the Sea Spirit, with their nimble size and experienced crews, can adapt to changing circumstances as they arise. This flexibility ensures that passengers have the best chance of exploring diverse sites, encountering wildlife, and experiencing the full spectrum of Antarctica.
Expert-Led Expeditions:
Small expedition ships often feature a team of expert guides, naturalists, and scientists on board. These professionals offer in-depth lectures, lead excursions, and share their extensive knowledge of the Antarctic ecosystem. Passengers benefit from a richer understanding of the region's geology, wildlife, and history, allowing guests to relate their experiences to moments in history and better understand the surroundings they are immersed in. Poseidon was no exception here, with an Expedition Team leader, Mario, who had been guiding in Antarctica for 11 years, backed by a trilingual team in addition to English (German, Chinese, and Russian) to highlight their own knowledge and experience throughout the voyage.
Unmatched Adventure Opportunities:
The small size of the Sea Spirit and other expedition ships facilitates a more adventurous experience for passengers. Activities such as sea kayaking, Zodiac cruising, and shore landings are available due to the small scale, allowing travelers to explore ice formations, glaciers, and wildlife up close. This hands-on approach to exploration fosters a sense of adventure and discovery that is unparalleled in the grandeur of the Antarctic Peninsula.
I received a quick and friendly response from my contact, Christina Mayo, both in email and phone calls. My request for information was provided in less than a day. She took a few minutes to chat about family and events. Dealing with her has always been a pleasure!

The response from Adventure Life to my first inquiry was prompt and promising. I worked with Jamie Broeckel, Trip Planner, via text, email, and phone calls- always extremely responsive and thorough with information and explaining the process to arrange a private tour for me to Malaysia Borneo. Within about week, the booking was complete and I made decisions because of Jamie's great customer service , friendly manner, and overall competence on behalf of the company's travel expertise. Now I have an itinerary, additional Trip Planner Assistants, several links for vital information for traveling to Maylasia, etc. Still many details for Sept. trip, but now the heavy lifting is done and I can enjoy the rest of the anticipation and research!! Thanks Jamie- you are amazing!!!!

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
