The Maldives is not just a relaxing getaway—it’s also a home for diverse wildlife, both marine and terrestrial. Visitors can explore its waters, home to turtles and colorful reef fish, and discover the endemic species inhabiting its islands. Here’s a guide to the top wildlife to see.
Sharks
Divers can enjoy peace of mind knowing that great white sharks are not in the area. Instead, the Maldives is home to a variety of non-aggressive shark species such as reef sharks, whale sharks, nurse sharks, and the rarely seen hammerheads. Diving in the Maldives offers the chance to swim near these gentle sea creatures.
Where to find them: For shark sightings in the Maldives, visit Baa, Ari, Maaya Thila, or Rasdhoo Atolls. Baa Atoll is particularly famous for its seasonal whale shark gatherings, especially from May to November, while December to April offers broader shark viewing opportunities throughout the Maldives.

Rays are located in oceans worldwide, but the Maldives stands out with its abundance of ray species, including stingrays, fantail rays, and eagle rays. Among them, the manta rays with their impressive wingspans of up to 5.5 meters are a highlight when you visit the country.
Where to find them: Hanifaru Bay, a Marine Protected Area and UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in Baa Atoll is the prime location for manta ray sightings, with Ari Atoll also being a reliable location. Other rays inhabit shallow lagoons across various atolls. Manta ray movements follow monsoon-driven plankton blooms: east atolls from May to November, and west atolls from December to April.
Turtles
Another animal to see in the Maldives is sea turtles like Hawksbills, Greens, and Leatherbacks. Turtle sightings peak from June to November, when nesting occurs, and you might even witness hatchlings' journey to the sea. Take the chance to visit the turtle rescue center and learn more about Maldives' initiatives in conservation and saving the turtles.
Where to find them: Sea turtles are prevalent in the Maldives' lagoons and seagrass beds, especially in the Lhaviyani and Baa Atolls.

Marine mammals such as dolphins, whales, and porpoises are common sightings in Maldives. Dolphins, particularly spinner and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins can be observed throughout the year in the Maldives while blue whales migrate from November to May. Humpback whales are more frequently seen from June to October. Boat tours offer marine mammal viewing opportunities.
Where to find them: Dolphin-watching excursions thrive in the North and South Male Atolls, where spinner and bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen. The Muli Channel in Meemu Atoll stands out as a top dolphin-watching spot, and South Ari Atoll is prime for whale watching.

I worked closely with Karilynn. My client was extremely difficult to work with, she constantly changed her mind on the itinerary. My clients changes required extra work for Karilynn, who was required to call her vendors and work partners. It was a very frustrating situation. Karilyn was very professional through the whole ordeal.
