Day 1: Kobe (Osaka), Japan | Embark

Kobe is a port city between the mountains and the harbor, known for its Kobe beef, waterfront parks, museums, and restaurants. It also provides access to nearby cultural and historic destinations. Visit Kyoto to explore temples, Zen gardens, and UNESCO World Heritage sites. In Nara, see Nara Park, where sika deer roam freely, and visit Todai-ji Temple, home to the Great Buddha. Nearby Osaka offers landmarks including Osaka Castle and the Dotonbori district, known for its restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

Day 2: Kochi, Japan

Visit Kochi Castle, one of Japan's few surviving castles from the 17th century, and explore its historic buildings and surrounding grounds. Continue to Chikurin-ji Temple, a Buddhist temple known for its gardens and cultural significance. End the day at Katsurahama Beach on the Pacific coast, a popular spot for coastal views and local history.

Day 3: Matsuyama, Japan

A journey on a scenic ropeway lifts you toward Matsuyama Castle, where panoramic views sweep across city streets and distant islands, while the castle’s historic towers and artful galleries invite closer inspection. In the heart of the city, the legendary Dogo Onsen — its ornate wooden façade brimming with tradition — offers a restorative soak in the hot springs beneath its historic beams. The adjacent Dogo Shotengai shopping street unfolds in a parade of sights, sounds and scents, inviting you to savor local mikan citrus fruit and the sweet mochi treat known as botchan dango. Amid tranquil gardens, Ishite-ji Temple enchants with its striking Niomon Gate, enigmatic cave passage and ancient pagoda, concluding a day of wellness, history and market life with memorable moments in sacred spaces.

Day 4: Miyajima Island, Japan | Hiroshima Japan

Welcoming you to this sacred island, the vermilion torii gate of the iconic Itsukushima Shrine appears to float gracefully over the Seto Inland Sea. Officially named for the shrine but more commonly known as Miyajima, the island was famously designated as one of the three most scenic views in Japan by a Confucian scholar in the 17th century. As you step ashore, free-roaming wild deer greet your arrival, quietly accompanying your exploration through centuries of beautifully preserved Japanese heritage. Beyond the magnificent shrine complex, the lush, tranquil canopy of Momijidani Park invites peaceful reflection among native maples. For a truly elevated perspective, ascend the forested slopes of Mount Misen via the scenic ropeway for unobstructed panoramas of the surrounding archipelago and its pristine coastal beauty.

Emerging from a profound modern history, Hiroshima stands today as a testament to resilience and enduring peace. At the heart of this transformative city lies the poignant Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, where the hauntingly preserved Atomic Bomb Dome serves as a powerful symbol of hope. Beyond these moving monuments of remembrance, an atmosphere of tranquil beauty awaits within the meticulously sculpted landscapes of Shukkeien Garden. Winding pathways lead past serene koi ponds and elegant teahouses, offering a quiet sanctuary that perfectly encapsulates the enduring spirit and rich cultural renaissance of today’s Hiroshima. Complement your exploration with some of the city’s renowned cuisine, from ramen bowls to fresh oysters to the savory, layered crêpe dish of okonomiyaki.

Day 5: Beppu, Japan

Plumes of geothermal steam rise gracefully above Beppu, transforming this coastal enclave into a mesmerizing natural spectacle. The otherworldly beauty of the Jigoku, or Seven Hells, offers a breathtaking display of the earth’s raw power in bubbling pools of cobalt blue and crimson waters. Beyond these striking visual marvels, profound relaxation awaits along the shoreline. Succumb to the therapeutic embrace of traditional volcanic sand baths, allowing the naturally heated earth to gently soothe the body and mind. Or visit the mud baths and steam baths in this town renowned for its onsen districts created by the natural geothermal activity. Wandering through atmospheric, mist-shrouded streets lined with historic bathhouses reveals an authentic Japanese wellness culture that has rejuvenated explorers for centuries.

Day 6: Hososhima (Hyuga), Japan

Carved by the relentless forces of the Pacific Ocean, the columnar basalt cliffs of Umagase on Hyuga Cape rise dramatically along the coastline, offering breathtaking panoramas of the sapphire waters below. Nearby you’ll find the Sea Cross, a unique geological marvel where millennia of crashing waves have fractured the rocky shoreline into a distinct cruciform shape. Local lore says that this naturally sculpted coastal gorge grants wishes to those who gaze upon its striking geometry. Along this scenic stretch of coastline, the expansive Okuragahama Beach beckons with its pristine sands and turquoise waters, equally ideal for surfing or a seaside stroll, while a visit to the serene Omi Shrine invites deeper understanding of the region’s spiritual heritage.

Day 7: Ushibuka, Japan

Gliding through the pristine Amakusa archipelago, your arrival at Ushibuka, on the island of Shimoshima, reveals a traditional fishing village with a coastal skyline gracefully defined by the modern curves of the Ushibuka Haiya Bridge, designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano. Beyond the vibrant waterfront, a brief journey transports you to the UNESCO World Heritage village of Sakitsu, where a picturesque Gothic church honors the region’s hidden heritage of Christians who practiced in secret during the Edo period’s ban on the religion. Returning seaward, a scenic boat tour unveils lush, tranquil coves along the rugged shores of the archipelago. Ashore, the spirited rhythms of the celebrated Ushibuka Haiya folk song and dance echo through the streets, inviting you to connect deeply with the authentic soul of this remote maritime haven.

Day 8: Moji (Kitakyushu), Japan

The beautifully preserved streets of Moji’s historic harbor district, Mojiko Retro, transport you to Japan’s elegant Meiji and Taisho eras, and handsome red-brick façades whisper tales of a bustling international past. After a leisurely walk along the waterfront with sweeping views of the Kanmon Strait, stop into a local café for the city’s signature yaki curry, a rich dish of baked curry crowned with melted cheese and a perfectly soft-boiled egg. Heading deeper into Kitakyushu, explore the museums housed in Kokura Castle to learn of the region’s samurai history, and reflect on your discoveries during a stroll through the picturesque Katsuyama Park.

Day 9: Busan, South Korea

Nestled along the sea with verdant mountains rising as a backdrop, Busan seamlessly intertwines striking modern architecture with deep-rooted cultural heritage. The kaleidoscopic terraced streets of Gamcheon Culture Village invite you to wander through a living canvas of brilliant murals and panoramic ocean views. Further along the dramatic rocky shoreline, Haedong Yonggungsa is the rare Korean temple situated on the seaside, offering the opportunity for peaceful reflection set against the rhythmic crash of ocean waves. To immerse yourself in authentic local life, navigate the bustling aisles of the legendary Jagalchi Fish Market, where an astonishing array of fresh ocean fare showcases the region’s rich culinary heart.

Day 10: Sasebo, Japan

Embrace the spirit of maritime discovery in Sasebo, where a rich heritage as a naval base meets spectacular natural beauty. Ascend to a scenic overlook to witness a splendid panorama of Kujukushima. Literally meaning “99 islands,” the archipelago actually encompasses more than 200 emerald isles that are equally captivating when viewed from elevated observatories, boating tours, kayaking expeditions or coastal cycling. For a unique cultural immersion, explore the streets of Huis Ten Bosch, an enchanting replica of a traditional Dutch town that celebrates the region’s historic European connections. Another unexpected treat in Sasebo is the city’s fabulous burgers, which have become a signature dish since the U.S. military was stationed here after World War II.

Day 11: Kagoshima, Japan

Kagoshima has been affectionately crowned the "Naples of the East" for its balmy climate, bayside setting and the dramatic volcanic peak that commands the horizon. Take a ferry to the smoldering Sakurajima volcano and bike or drive the paths for an up-close look at this geological phenomenon. Back in Kagoshima, get another perspective on Sakurajima from the observation deck at Shiroyama Park, historically significant as the site of the Satsuma Rebellion’s demise and the end of the samurai class. Then experience samurai heritage in its heyday at the Sengan-en Garden, a landscape of bamboo groves, colorful blooms, streams and shrines built in the 17th century by the powerful Shimazu clan. Further afield, the tranquil town of Chiran reveals beautifully preserved samurai residences and private gardens, along with a poignant museum dedicated to the kamikaze pilots who departed from here during World War II.

Day 12: Coast of Japan Scenic Navigation

Sailing the coast of Japan reveals a stunning contrast of deep blue horizons and rugged, mountainous shorelines. As your yacht traces ancient maritime routes once navigated by legendary merchants, watch for migrating whales breaching the surface and elegant seabirds riding the gentle ocean swells. This evocative passage offers a profound connection to a timeless empire. Please note: Navigation times may change at the Captain’s discretion.

A brief journey transports you to the timeless temples and exquisite Zen gardens of Kyoto, home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites. Explore another ancient capital in Nara, where sacred sika deer roam freely across Nara Park, guiding travelers toward the UNESCO-protected Great Buddha housed within the monumental wooden architecture of Todai-ji Temple. In the nearby city of Osaka, the sweeping majesty of Osaka Castle contrasts with the neon-illuminated wonderland of Dotonbori in Japan’s foodie capital.

This was my first experience with Adventure Life - and I couldn't have been more pleased with the trip. The guides and local staff in both Buenos Aires and Uruguay were terrific - extremely helpful and accommodating. I really enjoyed meeting the friendly staff in Buenos Aires in person (I left my bags with them for the afternoon).
