Day 1: Arrive in Belize

Arrive at Belize City International Airport, meet an Island Expeditions representative, and transfer to the Belize Biltmore Plaza. Settle in and enjoy the central courtyard, pool, restaurant, and bar facilities.

Please note:
"Basecamping" involves sleeping in wall-tented cabanas. These spacious safari-style tents have ample headroom to walk around, are on raised wooden floors, and have real wood-framed beds (6-inch foam mattresses). Tents can be configured with either double or single beds. All bed linen is provided.

Day 2: Arrive on Half Moon Basecamp

Meet in the lobby at 8:30 AM and make your way to the waiting motorboat charter. Travel by boat 56 miles out to sea, passing through mangrove ranges and white sand cayes, before arriving at Lighthouse Reef Atoll, the furthest island group in Belize. Upon arrival at Half Moon Caye, your guide team orients you to the island and helps you settle into your accommodations. Enjoy a late lunch, followed by a session of sea kayaking and snorkeling instructions before heading out on the water.

Day 3-5: Activities on Lighthouse Reef Atoll

Discover the crystal clear waters and vibrant marine life of Lighthouse Reef, a remote gem in Belize. Engage in thrilling sea kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving experiences in the Caribbean.

During your trip, expert guides share fascinating insights about the reef ecology, local plants and animals, and the lush coconut and littoral forest of the island. Explore Half Moon Caye, a breathtaking 45-acre nature reserve inhabited by red-footed boobies and majestic frigate birds. Visit viewing platforms built by the Belize Audubon Society to observe nesting sites on the island.

Over the next few days, choose from a variety of exploration activities, including a visit to a nearby sunken shipwreck. Daily plans adjust based on the weather and the preferences of your group. If relaxation beckons, unwind in a hammock with a good book and a refreshing beverage!

Due to the remote location of the Lighthouse Reef Basecamp, the activities on the reef portion of this trip are weather-dependent and are subject to change.

Day 6: Arrive in Bocawina Rainforest Resort

Choose your own adventure for your last morning on Lighthouse Reef! Grab a mask, snorkel, and fins for a final visit to your favorite coral reef spot, or fly fish on the flats. Return by boat to Belize City and board a plane for a quick 30-minute flight to Dangriga, followed by a short drive into the southern Maya Mountains. Nestled in the middle of Mayflower Bocawina National Park, Bocawina Rainforest Resort provides the perfect location to experience the broadleaf tropical rainforest and its amazing flora and fauna. Settle into your accommodations, learn about the property, and sign up for optional afternoon activities or a thrilling nocturnal hike.

Day 7: Activities on Bocawina Rainforest Resort

Wake up to the sounds of the tropics as local birds chatter overhead. Enjoy a quiet morning with a cup of coffee and binoculars to spot wildlife before starting your day. After breakfast, stop at the adventure center to get outfitted with a harness. The hike to Antelope Falls takes you into the national park, past an unexcavated Maya ruin, and up steep trails. Maintain a steady pace toward the falls while your guides share information about the local plants and animals.

At the top of the trail, swim in the natural pools and take in views spanning past the lowland savannah to the Caribbean Sea. Following a short break, the guides prepare you to rappel down Antelope Falls. This activity is entirely optional, and you are welcome to simply hike back down instead. Afterward, return to the restaurant for a pre-ordered lunch.

Please note that Antelope Falls features a two-pitch, 250-foot drop and requires a minimum weight of 100 pounds per participant. For a less strenuous option, the Bocawina Falls hike and rappel serves as a great alternative.

Day 8: Free day on Bocawina Rainforest Resort

Enjoy a complete day of leisure. Stay close to the lodge, or follow a trail to a favorite pool or waterfall. Mayflower Bocawina National Park provides an excellent network of trails for various skill levels. Choose the family friendly Bocawina Falls Trail or the Bird Loop for a relaxed hike, or take on the strenuous Big Drop Falls trail for a more challenging route leading to a spectacular waterfall.

Day 9: Arrive on Glover's Reef Basecamp

Start early today, meeting at 9:00 AM for a 9:30 AM departure from Dangriga. Travel beyond the main Barrier Reef to the private basecamp on Southwest Caye, arriving around 10:00 AM. Upon arrival, your guides introduce you to your new environment, provide a camp orientation, and help you settle into your tent cabana. After lunch, head out on the water to receive professional instruction covering the fundamentals of sea kayaking, snorkeling, and tropical water safety. Paddle to a nearby patch reef and begin exploring the incredible snorkel sites Glover's Reef Atoll has to offer.

Day 10-12: Activities on Glover's Reef Basecamp

Start your day with an early swim, or grab a mat and practice sunrise yoga by the beach. The itinerary remains entirely flexible to match the interests of the group and current weather conditions. Choose from activities like sea kayaking, snorkeling the lagoon and outer reef walls, Belizean style handline fishing, and learning to sail a kayak. Relaxing in a hammock with a good book and a cold beverage is always a popular option. Attend informative sessions about Belize, the marine environments, and local culture. End each day enjoying drinks and local snacks while sharing stories of your daily adventures.

Day 13: Depart Glover’s Reef Basecamp

  • 1 Breakfast
Make the most of your final morning at Glover's Reef Basecamp. Snorkel at your favorite patch reefs, explore island trails, relax in a hammock, or stroll along the beaches.

The boat charter departs midmorning to take you back to the mainland. Your trip finishes in the coastal town of Dangriga, where the logistics and support staff coordinate your onward land or air connections.

For travelers departing Belize after this trip, an overnight stay in Belize City is strongly recommended. International flight connections require a departure the following day. Contact an Adventure Life Trip Planner to reserve a hotel in Belize City or to extend the itinerary with another exciting Belize adventure.
