Day 1: Parque Pinguino Rey

  • 1 Lunch
Take the morning ferry journey fork approximately two hours across the Straits of Magellan to the island of Tierra del Fuego. Have the chance to see marine mammals such as the Peale’s Dolphin and South American Sea Lion or keep on eye on the sky for Albatross, Dolphin Gulls, South American Terns.

When you arrive the town of Porvenir meet your local guide for a briefing and some refreshments in a cozy local hosteria before heading out to see the King Penguin colony. On the approximately two hour drive along the coast of Bahia Inutil (Useless Bay) look for sightings of Guanaco, the Southern Grey Fox and even Flamingos, until we reach the Parque Pinguino Rey. This private reserve serves to protect the rare species of the King Penguin, which archaeological discoveries of penguin bones in the area prove that this colony has been coming here for over 6,000 years! This small group trip will observe the penguins from an appropriate distance as it is critical that the penguins’ natural habitat is maintained.

After lunch, return to Punta Arenas by a shorter, 20 minute ferry ride.

Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!
