Most Croatian cruises sail either from Dubrovnik to Split or from Split to Dubrovnik, two vibrant and historic cities along Croatia’s stunning Dalmatian coast. I highly recommend arriving at least a day before your cruise begins to avoid any travel delays — and to give yourself time to soak in the beauty of your starting point. Likewise, consider staying an extra day after your cruise ends; both Dubrovnik and Split offer plenty to explore, whether you prefer wandering independently or enjoying a privately guided land tour extension.
In Dubrovnik, don’t miss a walk atop the ancient city walls — the views over the shimmering Adriatic and terracotta rooftops are absolutely breathtaking (although you might want to plan this for the early morning, as it can get quite hot by midday!). Stroll through the marble-paved streets of Old Town, visit the Rector’s Palace, and step inside the stunning Franciscan Monastery, home to one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe. For a different perspective, take the cable car up Mount Srđ for panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. The city walls do charge an entrance fee, so I would suggest purchasing the Dubrovnik Pass, which not only covers the walls but also includes access to a number of museums and galleries around the city — offering great value and saving you time.If you have a little more time in Dubrovnik, consider a day trip to nearby Lokrum Island, just a short ferry ride away. This lush island offers shaded walking paths, hidden swimming spots, and even a small saltwater lake, perfect for a relaxing afternoon.
In Split, be sure to explore the heart of the city: Diocletian’s Palace. Built for the Roman emperor in the 4th century, this living monument buzzes with modern life — cafés, boutiques, and homes are tucked within its ancient walls. Wander the Riva promenade along the waterfront, enjoy the lively atmosphere of Pjaca Square, and climb the bell tower of St. Domnius Cathedral for spectacular city views. For a peaceful escape, visit Marjan Hill, a forested park ideal for hiking, biking, or simply admiring the coastline.
Both cities offer a perfect blend of history, culture, and seaside charm — the ideal bookends for a Croatian cruising adventure.
