The Amazon rainforest in Peru is a place of unparalleled biodiversity and natural beauty, offering a truly unique and enchanting travel experience. Whether you're an adventure enthusiast, a nature lover, a family looking for an educational vacation, or a solo traveler seeking a transformative journey, the Amazon has something extraordinary for everyone. Let's delve into the top 5 things to do and see in this awe-inspiring region.
Amazon River Boat Excursions
Exploring the Amazon River through boat excursions is a captivating way to immerse yourself in the heart of the rainforest. Navigating the meandering tributaries and witnessing the diverse wildlife, including pink dolphins, colorful birds, and elusive jaguars, is an experience that will leave a lasting impression. Who it appeals to: Nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, and adventure seekers will find the boat excursions particularly enthralling. Families with children who are curious about the natural world can also enjoy this activity. Insider Tips: Opt for early morning or late afternoon excursions for the best chance to spot wildlife when they are most active. Consider a guided tour led by a knowledgeable naturalist to gain deeper insights into the flora and fauna. Practicalities: The best time for these outings is during the dry season (June to November) when water levels are lower, and wildlife sightings are more common. Be sure to bring insect repellent, a hat, and sunscreen for protection during the excursion.
Canopy Walk and Observation Towers
Ascending into the lush canopy of the Amazon rainforest provides a unique perspective and a chance to observe the ecosystem from above. Canopy walks and observation towers offer breathtaking views, as well as the opportunity to witness the rich birdlife and other canopy-dwelling creatures. Who it appeals to: Birdwatchers, botany enthusiasts, and travelers with a thirst for adventure will relish the canopy walk and tower experiences. It's also suitable for families with older children who can handle the height and physical exertion. Insider Tips: Visit the canopy walk or tower during the early morning hours when wildlife is most active and the air is fresh. A guided experience can enhance the understanding of the intricate ecosystem. Practicalities: These activities require a moderate level of physical fitness and are not recommended for individuals with a fear of heights. The walkways and towers are safe, but it's essential to follow safety guidelines provided by the staff.
Indigenous Community Visits
Engaging in cultural exchanges with indigenous communities in the Amazon offers a window into their traditional lifestyle, knowledge of medicinal plants, and age-old customs. Visitors can participate in craft-making, learn about ancient hunting techniques, and gain insights into sustainable living practices. Who it appeals to: Cultural enthusiasts, anthropology buffs, and travelers seeking meaningful connections with local communities will find these visits enriching. Families with children interested in diverse cultures can also benefit from this experience. Insider Tips: Approach the community visit with respect, open-mindedness, and a willingness to learn. Purchasing handicrafts directly from the artisans contributes to the community's economic empowerment. Practicalities: Always arrange community visits through responsible tour operators who prioritize respectful and mutually beneficial interactions. Adhering to cultural norms and guidelines established by the community is crucial for a positive experience.
Nighttime Jungle Walks
Embarking on a nighttime jungle walk unveils a different world of creatures, sounds, and sensory experiences that come to life after dark. Guided walks offer the chance to spot nocturnal animals, such as tree frogs, night monkeys, and tarantulas, while under the cover of the starlit sky. Who it appeals to: Nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, and adventure seekers with a penchant for nocturnal exploration will find the jungle walks fascinating. Families with older children can partake in this activity as a unique educational adventure. Insider Tips: Wear long sleeves, pants, and closed shoes for protection against insects and other nocturnal creatures. Listen closely to the sounds of the jungle and allow your senses to guide you through this magical experience. Practicalities: Nighttime walks are typically conducted in small groups with experienced guides for safety and enriched interpretation of the jungle's nightly wonders.
Survival Skill Workshops
Learning basic survival skills from local experts equips travelers with essential techniques for navigating the rainforest, identifying edible plants, and understanding traditional methods of living in harmony with the environment. These workshops provide a hands-on understanding of the jungle's resources and the indigenous knowledge passed down through generations. Who it appeals to: Adventure enthusiasts, aspiring naturalists, and travelers with an interest in learning practical skills will find the workshops intriguing. Solo travelers seeking a transformative experience will also benefit from these immersive sessions. Insider Tips: Approach the workshops with a willingness to actively participate, ask questions, and absorb the wisdom shared by the local guides. Engage in hands-on activities to fully comprehend the survival techniques. Practicalities: Participating in survival skill workshops requires a moderate level of physical fitness and a willingness to embrace the raw and authentic nature of the training. Always follow the guidance provided by the local experts for a safe and informative experience.

The response from Adventure Life to my first inquiry was prompt and promising. I worked with Jamie Broeckel, Trip Planner, via text, email, and phone calls- always extremely responsive and thorough with information and explaining the process to arrange a private tour for me to Malaysia Borneo. Within about week, the booking was complete and I made decisions because of Jamie's great customer service , friendly manner, and overall competence on behalf of the company's travel expertise. Now I have an itinerary, additional Trip Planner Assistants, several links for vital information for traveling to Maylasia, etc. Still many details for Sept. trip, but now the heavy lifting is done and I can enjoy the rest of the anticipation and research!! Thanks Jamie- you are amazing!!!!

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
