This morning board an early train heading towards Machu Picchu. Ride the train for about one hour to Trail Marker 104, where you disembark and start hiking for about 3 hours (about 8 km or 5 miles) to Wiñayhuayna located at 2550 meters (8366 feet). This is a challenging hike that winds diagonally up the side of the canyon away from the river and climbs about 700 meters (2,300 feet). Stop for a picnic lunch and visit the archaeological site Wiñayhuayna. After exploring the site, join the famous Inca trail and walk about 2 hours (about 6km or 2.5 miles) to the famous Sun Gate (Inti punku) located at 2700 meters (8850 feet). Here you can stop and enjoy beautiful views before continuing down to the site of Machu Picchu for a guided tour.
After your tour of Machu Picchu, return to the village of Aguas Calientes (located at the base of Machu Picchu). Enjoy one of many excellent local restaurants or end your day soaking in the hot springs after exploring one of the most magical archaeological sites in the world.

This was our first trip to South America and we were a little nervous. But Adventure Life made things so easy! All our questions were answered before we left, and our guide, Vidal, was amazing! He gave us enough space to explore without rushing us along. He also knew where the best picture taking opportunities were, which was great.
