On a slight whim, my husband and I decided to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary with a trip! Our destination - the land of PURA VIDA.
This was an adventure-filled, yet rejuvenating tour through such a beautiful country! Thrilling activities, interesting wildlife, delicious cuisine, gorgeous scenery, and special people made for an amazing week. The 7 days FLEW by! But you know what time does when you are having fun...
You know how there are just those people who are "automatic friends"? Caro is one of those people in my life.
What is unique about our friendship is that it started through our jobs over Skype and email. Day in and day out we were in contact - problem solving, figuring out itineraries, and discussing our fun weekends. We also bonded over our hopeless love of chocolate cake.
Another unique characteristic of this friendship - Caro lives in San Jose, Costa Rica and I am a Montanan. We expected that our conversations would forever be typed.
However, I am glad our expectations were wrong. I was able to practice my SPOKEN Spanish with Caro this past October! My husband and I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Costa Rica, and we spent our last evening with my "automatic friend". We were hosted by Caro and her husband, Ale, in their San Jose home. Their sweet three-week-old daughter, Sofi, also made some appearances throughout the evening.

They SPOILED us with a meal of patacones con salsa, casado, chorreadas con natilla, empanadas, horchata, pejibaye, cas, guanabanas, torta chilena... Needless to say we were "llenos" at the end of the night. We left Costa Rica with satisfied appetites...as well as full hearts.
A Ferry Ride Away...A World of Difference

Why Nicoya Peninsula?
Like I mentioned in another post, one of Jordan's dreams has been to SURF in COSTA RICA. So, when we were planning this trip, one goal was to make this dream come true. We were told that the Pacific side of the country is THE PLACE to surf. Nicoya Peninsula, here we come!
From our resort in La Fortuna, we bid farewell to Arenal Volcano and started west.
It was a beautiful tour through scenery of rolling hills, flowers, quaint towns, and bright green world contrasting with a bright blue sky. It was a breath-taking drive! It was also winding. That might actually be an understatement. Perhaps spiraling is a better term? If driving in Costa Rica, be prepared for twisting roads, MANY one way bridges (which STILL baffle me!), and even MORE potholes than one way bridges! But also prepare yourself for gorgeous vistas.

Journey to Puntarenas ferry terminal...
It took about 2 hours to get to the port town of Puntarenas. Much could be said about Puntarenas, but I will choose to refrain. One conclusion I came to upon entering the city was that I sure was glad we were getting on a ferry at 2:00 PM. Just enough time to get some lunch, fill up the rental car's tank, and get to the ferry terminal an hour in advance.
We decided to go straight to the ferry terminal just to check on things and make sure we had all the correct details. The news to us was that we did not. Apparently, for a couple months during low season the ferry runs a different schedule than the one we had. There was no ferry at 2:00 PM. We were stuck in Puntarenas until 4:00 PM!
It could be worse, and we made the most of it - got a ceviche lunch and watched fishermen on the shore. It could have been worse. Just let this be a lesson to check the ferry schedule because Puntarenas is not really a place you want to be for an extended amount of time.

Finally...time to board our ferry! It was a fun experience once we were on the Tambor III chugging across the Gulf of Nicoya to our final destination. Sitting on the top deck with the salty wind blowing all around was pretty fantastic! Just 45 minutes on the ferry, and we would almost be at Tango Mar!

Tango Mar - Finally!
Our Hyundai Tucson zipped along the roads that were, you guessed it...twisting and filled with, you know what...potholes. It was getting dark, and our resort proved a bit more complicated to get to than we had anticipated. Around 6:00 PM, we arrived at Tango Mar Resort, and I don't think either of us could have been happier!
After checking in and throwing our stuff in our suite, it was time for dinner! Priorities, you know? The resort has a fantastic restaurant, and that is a very good thing since you are in a fairly remote location. The huge dining room is open air under a thatched roof, so we could feel the wind and hear the waves. We had a delicious dinner, some good laughs, and some pleasant conversation with the excellent waitstaff. We also had the pleasure of meeting the owner of Tango Mar, Hilda. We got to know this energetic woman who fell in love with Tango Mar and moved to Costa Rica from Belgium over a decade ago. She actually took us on a tour of the entire grounds the next day!

Dream fulfilled!
The next morning we awoke to the sounds of breaking waves that we could actually see! Given multiple options at breakfast, neither one of us could stray from the "comida tipica", or typical Costa Rican style meal. I believe I was becoming addicted to plantains at this point.
We explored the beach for a little while, and remembered how great it feels to have sand between your toes and warm waves crashing into your body. Montana is not well known for its warm beaches...
Now back to how this story began. Jordan wanted to surf. So that is just what we did.
We made our way to Playa Carmen where we met up with Ben, our surf instructor. You can read all of the details of our experience in my "Adventure Abounds" post. To sum it up: Jordan was a fantastic surfer, and one item on his bucket list was checked off. I am NOT a fantastic surfer, but I am glad I can say that I tried.

Endless beaches.
Removed from the world.
The remainder of our time spent at Tango Mar basically went like this: Eat great food, lay buy the pool, hike around the grounds, eat great food, spot a big iguana, take a swim, order a poolside drink, let the waves crash against us, lay in a hammock on the beach, play a game of open air billiards, eat more great food. It was vacation at its finest!

As a self-proclaimed "foodie", I thought I would designate a post as a culinary tour of our trip. Jordan and I REALLY enjoyed the "comida tipica", or common dishes, in Costa Rica. When one thinks of rice and beans it probably seems a bit lackluster. However, when done WELL, they are delicious. There is also much to be said for eating what the locals eat - it is a component that can truly submerse travelers into a culture. You know what they say..."when in Rome, do as the Romans do". In Costa Rica they say "buen provecho".

Adventures Abound

Adventurous spirits!
I already wrote about our Pacaure River rafting trip in another blog post. However, it was so awesome, that I think it deserves to be mentioned again. You should not go to Costa Rica without taking on the Pacuare...you will NOT regret your decision.
But besides the rafting trip, Jordan and I participated in some other fantastic adventures! On our second full day, we had a canopy tour planned with Pozo Azul. This operator is so fantastic! Our guides were extremely knowledgeable (we learned about every plant and animal we encountered), passionate about what they do, and super friendly. Octavio and Ronaldo went out of their way to give us memorable experiences - like finding tarantulas, blue jean frogs, and the iconic red-eye frog for us to see up close! We also learned about their backgrounds of coming to Costa Rica from Nicaragua and how fortunate they feel to have the opportunity to share with others how they believe Costa Rica is great. It's amazing how you build relationships with people while soaring through the air from tree to tree.
The canopy tour consisted of nine ziplines high above the jungle floor. It was fantastic - like flying! The finale was a 900 meter zipline OVER the Sarapiqui River. Thrilling!
After we permanently landed on ground, we had a pleasant lunch at the restaurant on site. Our meal of fried local tilapia, plantains, fresh mango juice, and coconut flan was enjoyed on a balcony overlooking the Sarapiqui and swarming with vibrant hummingbirds feeding on the flowers nearby. It was awesome getting to watch them flitter around - fascinating creatures! Not to mention GORGEOUS creatures.

Rappelling over a what?!?
The next day brought a new activity. How does waterfall rappelling sound??
It might actually sound crazy, but it was SO MUCH FUN!
Basically, we were taken into the jungle, we harnessed up, we hiked deeper into the jungle, then we received our briefing. I must say it is a bit unnerving. As much as I tried to pay attention, all I heard was "lay horizontally over the ledge" and "let go of the rope" and "165 foot drop". You know, the important details.
It truly was exhilerating, and after the last of four rappels I wished there were more! You are in total control of how far and fast you fall, and the guides are constantly regulating the ropes and completely prepared to assist you if necessary. Therefore, it was controlled enough to be safe, but adventurous enough to be THRILLING. And bonus: it was beautiful hiking from waterfall to waterfall!

Surfing USA...or Costa Rica in this case...
Hang Ten!! "Caida Diez!!" Actually, I am not sure if that is what they say in Spanish. Our surfing instructor was from Australia...
Regardless of what the phrase is, what surfers SHOULD be saying is "Hang On!!" Enough said about my surfing abilities.
Actually, I did great the first time out in the open water after our short session with Ben, our instructor. I watched for the wave, started paddling, got my feet on the board, stood up, and I was SURFING! Beginner's luck, apparently. Each time after that, I would get my feet on the board, stand up, then crash into the water. After about 1.5 hours of that, I decided surfing is not my forte.
Fun experience nevertheless! And one of Jordan's dreams come true - to surf in Costa Rica! Playa Carmen, where we surfed, is located in the area best know for surfing in the country. Surfers were everywhere along the beach. So, I would say our experience was authentic and probably fairly challenging for first-timers.
Jordan has a background of skateboarding, so I think that helped him out a lot. He was naturally awesome at surfing! I thought my sixteen years of ballet would be advantageous, but alas...I have concluded I should stick to dancing.

Costa Rica adventures (Jenny Johnston)
Buenos Dias, San Jose! Greeting our first morning in Costa Rica.
Wake up call on the Pacuare!
After an initial night in San Jose, due to a late flight arrival, we started our journey with a bang! We got up EARLY that first morning in Costa Rica to begin our rafting adventure on the Pacuare River.
The Pacuare is one of the top FIVE commercial rafting rivers in the world, so we felt really fortunate to get to experience it. We rafted Class III & IV rapids...over 70 of them throughout the day! It was simultaneously invigorating, FUN, thrilling, and frightening. Despite occasional flashes of fear that overtook my mind, it was by far MY FAVORITE activity from our trip.
Costa Rica adventures (Jenny Johnston)
We survived the Pacuare! Back at base camp after changing out of our soaked clothes.
Selva Verde - A jungle experience.
After a day of adventure, we were taken to our first "home" of the trip...Selva Verde. This ecolodge is located on a 500 acre reserve, so opportunities to observe wildlife and vegetation abound! We sighted multiple toucans, a giant iguana, and "Jesus Christ" lizards known for being able to run across water. Selva Verde has a suspension bridge over the Sarapiqui River that we swayed down and took in some neat views. Our cabana overlooked the rushing river, and lush green was as far as the eye could see. We were truly deep in the jungle.
The soft roar of the river and the thick canopy overhead gave me a sense of peace. However, when the sun goes down and everything is PITCH BLACK...I mean, darker than any dark I have experienced...it gets a bit interesting. All you hear are the sounds of the surrounding jungle, but you cannot SEE anything anymore. Your headlamp provides enough light to follow the path and catch a glimpse of the lizard scurry across or see the gigantic spider hanging in its web above the walkway. Similar to the Pacuare, extremely fascinating but a bit frightening at the same time. If nothing else, I will be a stronger person after this trip...
