After leaving home at 3:30 AM on Sunday, I made it to Athens, Greece around 2 PM Monday.
The local partners knew I would be exhausted and dropped me off at my hotel so I could head to bed early after a quick welcome at their office. But the espresso is strong and the weather is gorgeous, so I decided to roam the city, instead, eating all of the things and living my best Greek life!
I stepped out from my hotel and began wandering up Athinas street, enjoying all the sites, sounds and people. I stumbled upon Monastiraki Square, a lively spot with musicans busqing, locals enjoying after work coffee and tourists soaking it all in!
It was incredible to see ruins just standing right in the middle of the city, with normal modern life continuing around them! First night in Athens, Greece (Erin Correia)
I strolled down a busy little side street, and learned it was one that I should avoid at all costs! Every tiny shop down the street sold a different sweet, and I do not have any self restraint when it comes to tasty food! There were shops with giant milkshakes, topped with slices of cake and cotton candy, shops where you could fill bags with little candies, and then the winner that I couldn't pass up - shops that sold fresh baked chunks of waffle topped in gelato and everything else you could imagine! Learning that Athens is my type of city! (Erin Correia)

It took me forever to choose a combination - they all looked too good. I finally settled on waffles covered in caramel and chocolate gelato, topped with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, nuts and huge chunks of Snickers! Delicious waffles, gelato and candy bar sundae in Athens, Greece (Erin Correia)
I made my way out of the shop, practically drooling, and found a place to sit down against a fence that was surrounding some ruins. Here, I feasted on the dinner of champions, and enjoyed watching the incredible number of cats run amok. Healthy dinner choices in Athens, Greece (Erin Correia)
As the sun started to set, I decided I had better start heading back to my hotel. Wandering through Athens, Greece (Erin Correia)
Along the way, I thought that eating my weight in dessert was not quite enough for the night, so I stopped in a hole in the wall gyro shop just before reaching my hotel. My first gyro in Greece - it did not disappoint! (Erin Correia)
I am all about wildlife and food when I travel, and if this evening was any sign of the adventure ahead, I was going to be in for a spectacular journey!
