This 4-day river cruise spends time along the Kumai River in search of orangutans and other unique wildlife. Visit three different feeding stations within Tanjung Puting National Park — where you will see wild orangutans as well as orangutans who were formally held in captivity who have been re-introduced back into the rainforest. Visit Camp Pondok Ambung, the tropical forest research station, and venture into the forest in search of nocturnal animals such as tarsiers and tarantulas. A traditional wooden Klotok riverboat will be your home base while you explore this magical region.
Highlights
Cruise through remote jungles that provide a habitat for many bird species
Enjoy multiple opportunities to see orangutans feeding at various sites
Visit Pondok Tanggui, a rehabilitation center for the orangutans
Involves minimal physical effort and is typically associated with leisurely activities. Activities are low-intensity or last less than a few hours each day.
When you arrive in Pangkalan Bun, your guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to the harbor where the boat awaits. Board your home for the next three days, a traditional Klotok, a flat-bottomed riverboat.
Leave the harbor and cruise upriver, leave the bustling port behind and head into the forests, habitat for many bird species and monkeys. Once you are within Tanjung Puting National Park, you will visit three feeding stations, the orangutan camp at Tanjung Harapan, Camp Leakey and Pondok Tanggui. You are more than likely to encounter several of the resident ex-captive orangutans that roam within the grounds of the research camp. There will be multiple opportunities to see orangutan feedings. When your guide calls out to announce the feeding with a whooping sound, you will hear the rustle of leaves and experience the excitement of seeing these great apes swing toward you. This afternoon after lunch, head to Tanjung Harapan. Where you'll hike to the feeding platform and view the orangutans in the while.
Day 2: Tanjung Puting National Park: Pesalat & Camp Leakey
After breakfast, cruise upriver to Pasalat Camp. Here you have an opportunity to take part in the reforestation project by planting trees. Return to your riverboat for lunch and continue upriver to Camp Leakey, the highlight of the park. Once you arrive in Camp Leakey, visit the information center where you can see the work of Dr. Birute Galdikas. She has been studying orangutans in the park since 1971. This is the home of the Orangutan Reseach Center and where the older orangutans are reintroduced back into the rainforest. You'll have the opportunity to trek into the tropical forest and see an orangutan feeding.
Later in the evening, if time and weather permit, cruise to Pondok Ambung, where you can hike into the forest and search for nocturnal animals such as tarsiers and tarantulas.
Day 3: Tanjung Puting National Park: Pondok Tangguy & Tanjung Harapan
After breakfast, cruise to Pondok Tanggui, an orangutan rehabilitation center. Join the morning feeding before returning to the riverboat and continuing to the village of Tanjung Harapan. This afternoon you will visit the Malayan settlement before viewing one last orangutan feeding at Tanjung Harapan camp. Tonight, join an optional excursion to see the fireflies along the river.

Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!
