At Sea

The next two days were spent at sea. During this time we were able to familiarize ourselves with the ship more in between our delicious meals. The ship had a cocktail of the day, so today we started our mission to try it each day. Today is when many of the onboard activities started to enter full swing.

We attended a couple lectures covering topics including citizen science, birds living in the areas of our travel, and the Humboldt current. These were quite informative and a nice way to pass the time while at sea. We watched a few more lectures from our cabin as well since they were available to be streamed live. They even have a German translator for all of the lectures, for the German guests.

We also attended a required briefing for anyone interested in sea kayaking in Antarctica. This was a paid excursion that we signed up for. We found out that there would probably only be about 20-40 guests able to do this excursion as long as the weather and ice allowed. However, there were probably 150 guests that had signed up for the excursion, so we were informed that selection would be performed via a lottery selection.

Aside from playing cards, reading and watching the sea, we were able to access the outdoor pool, jacuzzis and indoor sauna for the first time. These were all really great, and definitely our favorite features of the ship! Especially because they were almost always empty for some reason. The outdoor pool and jacuzzis provided a great view off the rear of the ship (I can't remember what that side is called in ship lingo). The sauna was.. hot! Go figure. The sauna was very roomy and the exterior wall of it was a giant window, so you could watch the scenery as you relaxed, which was really rad.
