Day 1: Darwin, Australia | Embark

Darwin, the capital of northern Australia, is a tropical city with a unique history. Located about 2,000 miles from Sydney and Melbourne, it was named after Charles Darwin by British settlers who built a remote outpost here. Though isolated, Darwin offers a mix of natural beauty, nearby islands, and bold Pacific flavors that make it a fascinating place to visit.

The area around Darwin is home to crocodile-filled waterways and lush tropical rainforests. One of the best ways to see the landscape is by airboat, especially over the winding rivers of Kakadu National Park, often covered in early morning mist. In town, the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens is a peaceful spot where you can hear birds singing and water flowing from fountains and waterfalls. It's a great place to relax, enjoy a picnic, or have a classic Aussie barbecue.

As the sun sets, people often head to Mindil Beach to enjoy the warm weather and the famous pink sunsets. Nearby, the Mindil Beach Market comes alive with stalls selling local crafts, souvenirs, and spicy Asian street food. It's a great spot to grab a bite, sip a cold drink, and watch the sky light up in color.

Despite its laid-back feel, Darwin has a strong and resilient history. During World War II, it was bombed by Japanese forces in 1942, and later, in 1973, it was nearly destroyed by Cyclone Tracy. Today, you can visit local museums to learn about these events and see how the city has rebuilt itself over the years.

Day 2-3: Day at Sea

Days at sea are a great chance to relax and enjoy some time for yourself. You can hit the gym, unwind at the spa, watch for whales, catch up on reading, or just soak up the sun. These calm days on the open ocean offer a nice break from the busy pace of shore excursions.

Day 4: Air Terjun Kiti, Indonesia

Of all the wonders in this astonishing, lesser-traveled part of the world, few are quite as memorable as witnessing a free-flowing waterfall spilling directly from the rainforest into turquoise seas. Bursting from a region of vast, untouched natural splendor, this remarkable sight captivates even the most seasoned of globe-wanderers. The Kitikiti Waterfall emerges from the dense jungles of West Papua’s western coast, in the Fakfak Regency – an area renowned for exotic natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and deep cultural heritage. This precious and secluded location is one that only a fortunate few are lucky enough to experience. Depending on the tide, the fresh water either plunges directly into the crystal-clear sea or cascades gently down onto the soft sands of the beach. Take your time to absorb the breathtaking surroundings, admiring the stunning sea views and tranquil beauty of the remote tropics. Relax in the sunshine, then cool off by leaping into the refreshing sea or feeling the invigorating rush of the waterfall’s fresh flow, as it washes over you. Strap on your snorkel mask to swim into a world of life under the surface, just offshore. This is a world where dense forests spill down rugged mountainsides to meet pristine waters, showcasing some of the most remote and awe-inspiring scenery on Papua Island.

Day 8: Kwatisore, Cenderawasih Bay, Indonesia

Kwatisore Bay is a two-kilometer-wide bay located west of Kwatisore Peninsula at the southwestern end of the wide Cenderawasih (bird of paradise) Bay. An area of 1,453,500 hectares, a great part of the bay, has been declared a national park. Within the national park is Indonesia’s largest marine national park. Some dive companies claim that Cenderawasih Bay is the whale shark capital of the world, and the area near Kwatisore Bay is one of the few places in the world where encounters can almost be guaranteed. The whale sharks seem to be permanent residents of the protected marine park and as the locals believe whale sharks are under the protection of spirits and bring good luck, not only has fishing them been traditionally prohibited, but the fishermen actively encourage their presence by feeding them small amounts of their catch. Therefore, the best places and time to look for the whale sharks – and to swim or dive with them - are the local fishing pontoons during the early morning hours.

  • Please note: Activity level and duration of this activity are approximate. More specific information and logistics are to be communicated by the Expedition Leader on board. This activity is recommended only for guests in good physical condition and with good swimming skills; some snorkeling experience might be needed in certain areas. Snorkeling takes place from either a beach or a Zodiac platform dependent on the conditions of the day. Equipment is available for all guests, though bringing personal equipment is welcome if desired (full-face masks are prohibited). Some floating noodles are also available for those guests who wish to make use of them. As the sun can be strong in these areas, I is recommended the use of eco-friendly sunscreen and a rash guard to protect as much skin as possible. It is compulsory to snorkel with a buddy and never alone. You are kindly reminded not to swim too far away from the site. Your Expedition Team are available to give you all the specific information you need. It is especially important to remember not to touch or kick anything nor stand on corals. If you are using an underwater camera or any other equipment, make sure it safely attached to you (neck or wrist strap) and that you are comfortable in the water first, prior to usage. Please remember not to interfere with the animals that you encounter during your snorkeling.

Day 9: Aisandami Village | Tanjung Mannguar, Indonesia

Leave the well-worn paths far behind and dive into the brilliant biodiversity of Western Papua. The rainforest bursts with life and is home to countless rare fauna and flora - from dazzling birds of paradise to unique medicinal plants. Aisandami Village, which waits in the lowlands of peaceful West Papua, is a welcoming gateway to a stunning marine park teeming with turtles, tropical fish and giant mammals. Nearby, the breathtaking Cenderawasih Bay National Park - Indonesia’s largest marine park - boasts crystal-clear waters frequented by magnificent marine life, including whale sharks, dolphins, and occasionally dugongs. This remarkable area is a vast treasure trove of unspoiled coral reefs, tropical ecosystems, and diverse fish species. The rainforests surrounding Aisandami Village promise further adventures - trek through the lush foliage, keeping an eye out for elusive wildlife like the flightless and fearsome cassowaries. Local experts guide you to hidden lookouts where you can glimpse the famously flamboyant Birds of Paradise, known for their extraordinary, brightly colored plumage and elaborate courtship dances. Along the way, you might cool off in stunning waterfalls and secluded natural pools or perhaps push canoes along the Woronggon River. A warm welcome always awaits in Aisandami Village, where the locals generously share their cultural heritage with visitors through dancing, traditional crafts, intricate wood carvings, and carefully woven baskets.

These gentle giants are believed to bring good luck, if you’re lucky enough to encounter them. Snorkel in the bay’s pristine clear waters, with the experienced team helping you to fully admire the sublime underwater diversity of the region - from lobsters to sea cucumbers, reef sharks, and tropical fish. Enjoy a truly stunning setting for a variety of water expedition activities, such as glass-bottomed boat rides, which provide an immersive clear window into an underwater universe of astonishing biodiversity. You’ll find Tanjung Mannguar in the easternmost part of Indonesia, at the northwest tip of New Guinea. Those who travel to this remote region are rewarded with many treasures. Snorkel into an underwater world that is at once beautiful, surreal, and eerie, as you explore hidden beauty in the midst of extraordinary Cenderawasih Bay. A tiny teardrop of an island, Pulau Rouw is ringed by pristine waters and immaculate turquoise seas. But it’s what lies below that is most fascinating about this sliver of island paradise. The clear waters unveil the ghostly wreck of a lost American P 38 fighter jet, which lies highly accessible in the shallow waters. The contrast is striking and spectacular, as you observe how nature has reclaimed and repurposed this lost wreck. The fuselage is now a cradle of life, surrounded and resided in by diverse and swirling tropical fish life, as well as intricate sea corals. Enjoy a unique opportunity to snorkel in close proximity to a living wreck like this and unlock the region’s fascinating history - learning how the plane came to rest here. The Expedition team’s deep expertise and local knowledge reveal the stories and secrets of the beautiful islands in the bay. Like its neighboring islands, Pulau Rouw boasts luxuriant paradise sands, perfect for soaking in the beauty of remote tropical Indonesia. Part of the Coral Triangle, this region is envied for remote, under-explored islands which lie concealed far from the typical tourist trails. Enjoy visiting a true paradise island, which has fascinating stories to tell, and where there is a lot to discover beneath the surface.

Day 12: Vanimo, Papua New Guinea

Only about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Indonesian border, Vanimo is the capital of the Sandaun (or Sundown) Province. It is one of only two towns in this remote region of Papua New Guinea. Although the Sepik River originates in the province, it bypasses Vanimo far to the south. The Sandaun Province is relatively undeveloped, but Vanimo has lovely beaches and some picturesque villages in the vicinity. The interior is covered in rainforest and logging is an important activity, putting to use Vanimo's port and protected bay.

Ali Island is one of the four islands located close to Aitape, off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. The eastern shore of Ali Island has a beautiful white sandy beach and offers swimming and snorkeling. The five villages on the island connect via well-maintained trails that lead to the school and Catholic church closer to the northern end of the island. The indigenous populations of this island are welcoming to guests and yet maintain their unique way of living and dressing, with colorful ceremonial headdresses, arm bands, and grass skirts. A village walk takes visitors past the clean local homes and gardens, to the Catholic church with its interesting paintings of the via crucis. Chat with the islanders or relax on the beach.

Day 14: Madang, Papua New Guinea

The very first houses of Madang were located on a small peninsula jutting into the Bismarck Sea – the land between today’s port and the Forum Park. The site had been chosen for its deep harbor and the fresh sea breeze. Found some 40 kilometers south of Cape Croisilles, the northern point of Astrolabe Bay, the port and station were originally called “Friedrich Wilhelms-Hafen” after the Prussian Crown Prince. The station had been built in 1891 to be the provincial headquarters of German New Guinea from 1892 onwards. After WWI and the eviction of the Germans, the town’s name was changed to Madang. Madang was occupied by the Japanese during WWII and to honor the coastwatchers working behind enemy lines, the Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse was inaugurated at the entrance to Madang Harbor at Kalibobo in 1959. Not only is this a shining light for shipping, it has also become an iconic feature of Madang. Today the town has a population of some 36,000 inhabitants and is connected by road to Hansa Bay in the north and Lae and the highlands to the south. Cattle, cocoa, and copra are important produce from Madang Province. With more than 170 languages spoken in the province, the small museum holds interesting pieces relating to the history and cultures of Madang and surrounding areas. Several of the trees along Modilon Road show hundreds of resting fruit bats waiting for the evening’s flights, some of them find their way to the Main Market.

The volcanic island of Garove is part of the Witu Islands and once had a 5-kilometer-wide (3.1 miles) caldera. The island was historically used to produce copra and cocoa, and in fact, still is today. Most of the villages are located around the exterior of the volcano. Steep cliffs explain why there is only one area settled on the inside. A promontory at the entrance’s southwestern corner is taken up by the school and the catholic church of the village of Widu, the only village inside the caldera.

Day 16: Rabaul, Papua New Guinea

If surreal and unique experiences are your thing, then the Papua New Guinean town of Rabaul should tick your travel boxes. Found on the north eastern tip of New Britain Island (the largest island off mainland PNG) Rabaul, the former provincial capital, has quite a remarkable location. The town is inside the flooded caldera of a giant volcano and several sub-vents are still quite active today! The lively city was almost entirely devastated by Mount Tavurvur in 1994, covering the city in ashfall, but thankfully costing no lives. Since then, thanks to Rabaul’s deep-water port, commerce has been on the up, and a few shops and hotels have managed to find an audience. However, Rabaul’s remote location together with the volcano still being one of the most active and dangerous in Papua New Guinea means tourism is not rife. Rabaul has an impressive WWII history which includes a 300-mile network of tunnels dug by Japanese POWs designed to conceal munitions and stores. After the Pearl Harbor bombings, the Japanese used Rabaul as their South Pacific base for the last four years of WWII, and by 1943 there were about 110,000 Japanese troops based in Rabaul. Post war, the island was returned to Australia, before it was granted independence in 1975. It should be noted that patience is a virtue here. However, that is not all bad. The slow pace of transportation allows travelers to marvel at the quite astonishing landscape.

Wild, uninhabited, and historical, Kennedy Island is a tiny piece of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Part of the remote Solomon Islands, the island is situated 15 minutes away by boat from Gizo, which is capital of the Western Province. Kennedy Island was formerly known as Plum Pudding Island, after an incident dating back to World War II. An incident involving one of the most famous figures in history.

John F. Kennedy, a lieutenant at the time, was a castaway on the island with his crew when their torpedo ship, PT 109, was sunk by the Japanese troops in August 1943. It is said that the future president swam dragging an injured crewmate by holding the strap of his life jacket in his teeth until reaching the island. He and his crew fed themselves with coconuts for two days before being found by Solomon Islanders. JFK even kept a coconut shell from the island on his desk in the Oval Office throughout his presidency.

For the history buffs, some artifacts dating from the crew’s passage can still be found on site. An island marked by history in short, but not only. Discovering Kennedy Island is an experience not to be missed for diving and nature lovers. The waters that surround the island are a submerged world of great richness and variety of colorful fishes and corals.

Day 22: Ambrym Island, Vanuatu

Unlike Espiritu Santo, with its raised coral reefs and white sand, Ambrym is a volcanically active island with dark sand beaches. Ambrym is known as the island of magic and is the source of five local languages that all evolved on Ambrym. This handful of languages contributes to the well over 100 languages of Vanuatu. Some of Ambrym’s magic takes place in the lush greenery of the local community of Ranon. Here the people perform a very special and traditional "Rom" dance. Participants prepare their masks and costumes in secrecy and the dance is reserved for special occasions.

Day 23: Day at Sea

Days at sea are the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind, and catch up with what you've been meaning to do. So whether that is going to the gym, visiting the spa, whale-watching, catching up on your reading, or simply topping up your tan, these blue sea days are the perfect balance to busy days spent exploring shoreside.

Day 24: Lautoka, Fiji | Disembark

  • 1 Breakfast
It doesn't get much sweeter than arriving on the sun-soaked shores of the Sugar City. Fiji's second-biggest settlement opens up a world of blissful beaches and turquoise seascapes, while its dense jungle lures the adventurous deep into its embrace. Step ashore where the first Fijians landed, and you'll understand instantly why they chose to make this island paradise their heavenly home. Experience rich Fijian life, and see dramatic displays like warrior dances, and remarkable local practices like firewalks, which kick up burning embers into the night's sky. Legend says the city took its name after two chiefs faced each other in a duel. A spear pierced one of the chiefs, leading to the shout of 'lau-toka!' or 'spear hit!' Sugar is Lautoka's main trade, but its botanical gardens are a sweet insight into the tropical plant life that thrives here - from pearl white lilies to tall, fragrant orchids. Explore temples, charming cafes, and mills - or barter for some of the juiciest mangoes you'll ever taste at the city's lively market. You'll only be able to resist the beaches for so long, and it doesn't get much more stunning than the Blue Lagoon - a heavenly blend of woven-together turquoise shades. Remote, wild, and unspoiled, these are some of the best tropical beaches in the world. There's more rejuvenating relaxation at the mineral-rich mud pools and spas, fueled by the volcanic activity below. Savala Island is a teardrop of sand offshore and another beautiful place to wander with the soft powder between your toes - along sandy spits that peter out into the water. Or swim and snorkel among its envied reefs, thronging with fish life.

This was my first experience with Adventure Life - and I couldn't have been more pleased with the trip. The guides and local staff in both Buenos Aires and Uruguay were terrific - extremely helpful and accommodating. I really enjoyed meeting the friendly staff in Buenos Aires in person (I left my bags with them for the afternoon).
