Brothers Juan and Felipe, fourth-generation shark hunters turned marine conservation leaders, will be your captains and guides for the next four days. Their Camp Cuevas program showcases their unmatched knowledge of the Sea of Cortez, from tracking hammerhead sharks to snorkeling with fur seals, exploring bioluminescent waters, and visiting mangroves that shelter endangered Eastern Pacific Hawksbill turtles. After a welcome lunch and program orientation, continue to your secluded beachfront camp on Isla San José. Day 3: Isla San Jose | Las Ánimas and Coastal Kayaking
Begin the day with breakfast at camp before heading out with the Cuevas brothers to Las Ánimas, a vibrant seamount known for its hammerhead sharks, playful fur seals, and abundant marine life rarely found elsewhere in the Sea of Cortez. Learn from your guides’ generations-deep knowledge as you snorkel among these remarkable waters. Return to camp for a freshly prepared lunch and a short siesta, then set out by kayak to explore Isla San José’s rugged coastline, striking rock formations, and thriving birdlife. Back at camp, unwind with happy hour, enjoy a chef-prepared dinner, and end the day stargazing beneath Baja’s brilliantly clear skies.
Enjoy breakfast at camp before heading out on the water with Juan and Felipe for a hands-on fishing experience to catch tonight’s dinner. After leaving the day’s catch with the camp chef, follow your guides to some of their favorite, rarely visited locations in the Sea of Cortez. Spend the day snorkeling vibrant reefs, kayaking along remote shores, hiking rugged island trails, or exploring hidden coves by boat. In the evening, enjoy a fresh-caught feast before heading out, if conditions allow, for a night snorkel among glowing bioluminescence, a magical end to an adventurous day.
Day 5: Transfer to La Paz | Sea Turtle Conservation
Begin the day exploring the lush mangroves near Juan and Felipe’s home, where they will introduce you to the endangered sea turtles they discovered and have worked to protect from poachers. Learn how their efforts led to the area being declared a no-catch zone, helping restore fish stocks and safeguard marine species in the Sea of Cortez. In the afternoon, journey back to La Paz, enjoying a picnic lunch along the way. Arrive in the city by mid-afternoon, check back into Hotel Catedral, and celebrate the end of your Camp Cuevas adventure with a festive dinner in town.
Day 6: Mobulas and Ocean Safari in the Sea of Cortez
Set out from La Ventana for a full day on the water in search of massive “fevers” of mobula rays as they glide and leap across the surface. Along the way, watch for turtles, dolphins, humpback whales, marlin, bait balls, and even orcas. This ocean safari combines snorkeling and wildlife viewing, exploring the waters around Isla Cerralvo and, conditions permitting, as far south as Bahía de los Muertos. May and June are peak migration months, offering the best chance to witness these extraordinary gatherings.
