Your stay at Scalesia Lodge offers a week full of exploration and adventure. Each day features a different guided excursion showcasing the diverse landscapes and wildlife of Isabela Island. Arrive any day, so your activities will depend on your arrival/departure days.
Here is the daily menu of activities at Scalesia Lodge:
Monday & Thursday: Tintoreras (AM) | Wall of Tears (PM)
Tintoreras is a group of islets reachable only by boat. Walk alongside a maze of narrow lava crevices, broken lava flows, sandy beaches, and stunning coves. This provides the perfect spot to practice your snorkeling skills. After lunch at Scalesia Lodge, visit the Wall of Tears, a historic stone structure built by prisoners between 1945 and 1959. Explore the site by bike or on foot along scenic coastal trails where giant tortoises can often be seen in their natural habitat.
Tuesday & Friday: Túneles (AM) | Wetlands & Tortoise Breeding Station (PM)
Take a 40-minute speedboat to Los Túneles to snorkel among lava arches and marine life, including sea turtles, rays, and reef fish. After lunch at Scalesia Lodge, explore the Wetlands and visit the Tortoise Breeding Station to observe flamingos, marine iguanas, and the island’s iconic giant tortoises.
Wednesday & Saturday: Chico and Sierra Negra Volcanoes (AM) | Sucre’s Cave, El Mango Viewpoint, and Free time at the beach (PM)
Today you will experience two of Isabela's best attractions. Sierra Negra is one of the most active volcanoes of the archipelago, and Volcán Chico is the youngest flank of Sierra Negra. After lunch at Scalesia Lodge, visit Sucre’s Cave to see its glowing rock formations, then continue to El Mango Viewpoint for panoramic views of southern Isabela and opportunities to spot finches. Enjoy free beach time or explore the relaxed coastal village of Puerto Villamil before returning to the lodge for dinner.
Sunday: Wall of Tears (AM) | Sucre’s Cave, El Mango Viewpoint, and Free time at the beach (PM)
Enjoy a visit this morning to the Wall of Tears. This interesting historical site, which towers 65 feet high and 300 feet long, was constructed between 1945 and 1959 by prisoners in the penal colony on the island. Return to Scalesia Lodge for lunch. This afternoon, you will enjoy snorkeling among wildlife in Concha Perla. The bay's calm waters are ideal for finding and observing the incredible array of local marine life. You may see tropical fish, penguins, turtles, and up to 20 different bird species.
