Three Considerations when Choosing your Galapagos Yacht

Typically, you will have to choose between these items to narrow it down to the Galapagos charter of your choice:

  1. Catamaran vs. Monohull: Galapagos Catamarans are small 16-passenger yachts and often have more spacious cabins and social areas above deck. Are catamarans more stable in the water? It is a misconception that catamarans are more stable in the water than monohulls; when you are out on the open waves in a smaller 16-passenger vessel, you won’t notice much difference!
  2. Simple vs. Luxury Charter: All vessels provide a similar experience exploring the Galápagos, usually with at least two daily excursions. The main differences are in the onboard amenities—such as cuisine, shared spaces, luxury features, and level of service—making these the key factors when selecting a charter vessel.
  3. Big Ship vs. Small Ship: Group size is a key factor when selecting a Galápagos charter. Larger vessels offer more space and amenities, while smaller vessels create a more intimate onboard atmosphere. Some smaller groups still choose larger ships to enjoy extra room.

Affordable Cruises and Deals. If you’re hoping to keep costs lower than average while still traveling with a trusted operator, we can match you with a more affordable Galapagos private yacht charter. These yachts may feature smaller cabins and more compact common areas, but they still deliver an exceptional experience exploring the islands with knowledgeable guides and attentive crews.

How To Choose the Right Galapagos Yacht Charter for You

1. Define Your Priorities

YES - Group Size: Determine your group size to know if you need a small or larger vessel
Comfort: Consider an upgraded or luxury yacht option with more common areas and amenities for more comfort
Focus: Note the activities you want to experience and be sure to communicate these priorities as you search for a vessel. Some Galapagos charters carry equipment for certain activities only, such as kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding.2. Budget -

Define what’s important to you in a ship? Do you want a luxury cabin with specific in-room amenities? What is important to you onboard while you are motoring between destinations? Communicate this to your Trip Planner to we can properly match your expectations.

2. What are the best Galapagos Islands to visit?

We have visited all of them! Truly, you can't go wrong with any itinerary!

Wildlife: All itineraries will include ample opportunity to spot sea lions, snorkeling, birdlife, and a variety of other wildlife. Do you have a specific species of bird or wildlife you want to be sure to spot? Let us know your goals, and we will advise which islands provide the highest likelihood of spotting them!

What are you most excited to see and do? Let us know your goals, and we will help guide you to which itineraries will fit your request.

Duration: Decide how long you’d like to cruise around the islands. Cruises vary from 4-15 days in length, and you can always add on time in a hotel on Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, or Isabela to extend your visit in the area.

4. Consider Season & Conditions

June-Nov: Cooler waters, vibrant marine life
Dec-May: Warmer, calmer seas, lush landscapes

5. Book Early & Responsibly

Book 6-12 months ahead.  Sustainability matters in the Galapagos because the islands are a fragile environment with unique ecosystems that are highly sensitive to human activity. The Galapagos hosts many endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, and their survival depends on careful management of tourism, fishing, and development.

Galapagos Yacht Charters FAQs

How much do Galapagos yacht charters cost?

Galapagos yacht charter pricing varies widely based on ship size, luxury level, group size, and itinerary length. Prices depend on the boat, season, and whether extras (like premium food, drinks, or special staff) are included. Contact a Trip Planner for more details on pricing of our Galapagos yacht charters based on your preferences.

Are Galapagos cruises worth it?

Yes, for many travelers, Galapagos yacht charters and cruises are worth it because they offer unmatched access to remote islands, daily guided wildlife encounters, and the chance to explore multiple ecosystems without flying between bases. The islands are a protected national park with strict access controls, so cruising is often the most efficient way to see diverse wildlife and landscapes. Cruising on a luxury yacht charter in the Galapagos also includes expert naturalist guides, meals, excursions, and sometimes gear like snorkels and kayaks, adding value for the experience.

When to Book A Galapagos Yacht Charter?

You should book your Galapagos private yacht charters as early as possible, especially for peak seasons (like Christmas/New Year, school holidays, or summer months). We recommend securing a private yacht charter in the Galapagos Islands at least 12–18 months in advance (or 2 years in advance for holiday weeks). This gives you the best options for ships, itineraries, and travel dates.

How many days is enough in Galapagos?

Most travelers find that 5–8 days on a private yacht charter to the Galapagos Islands give a very satisfying experience. This allows you to visit multiple islands, see a range of wildlife, and enjoy activities like snorkeling, hiking, and panga rides. Shorter Galapagos yacht charters (4 days) are possible but usually cover fewer sites; longer visits (10–15 days) are ideal if you want a deeper exploration or more relaxed pace.

How many people do you need to charter a Galapagos yacht?

There’s no strict minimum number of people required to take part on a Galapagos Islands yacht charter.  You can book most private yachts for your group even if it’s just a couple or a small family. Yacht capacities vary, but many vessels can be chartered privately regardless of whether you fill all cabins. A larger private yacht charter to the Galapagos Islands is more cost-effective when the group size is closer to capacity, but you don’t need to fill them to reserve.
