Lima in 24 Hours!

Our first morning in Lima had us waking up to an amazing breakfast before I wandered out into the streets of Miraflores to find a fabled cup of java. The streets were blanketed in a cool fog that cut visibility down to a block or two and had me wishing that I had brought a warmer jacket. Thankfully, the coffee was as excellent as advertised, and as I started to warm up I was ready to get a move on and see the rest of the city.

After a quick morning tour of the center of central Lima we were ready to explore some of the other highlights of the city: the food and drinks! There may be better dishes than ceviche to have as your first lunch in Peru, but if there is one I have not heard of it. Couple that with a seafood fried rice and two amazing Pisco Sours, and you have yourself an instant love of Peruvian cuisine.

Miraflores is famously perched atop seaside cliffs, with its modern, cosmopolitan streets about 300 feet above the crashing Pacific surf below. In spite of Lima’s horrible traffic, it is an incredibly walkable district that rewards folks that do not mind wandering around and taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of a new city. Even after we met our daily caloric limit we still loved wandering along the Malecon (the miles long seaside walkway) taking in the fresh oceanic air while watching surfers chase one of the endless rows of waves before they crashed onto the shore. Our one day in Lima came to an end surprisingly quickly, and while excited to explore the rest of the country, we still wished we could have spent one more day in a city that is too often overlooked.
