Welcome to New Orleans: Let the Adventure Begin

New Orleans (Tilly Cantor)
Welcome to New Orleans, the starting point of our Mississippi River cruise adventure.

After landing, grab a taxi and head to the InterContinental New Orleans, where American Cruise Lines arranges a comfortable pre-cruise stay. Once you arrive, pick up your travel packet at the front desk, settle into your room, and take a moment to relax after your journey.

If you still have a little energy, it’s worth heading out to explore. The famous French Quarter is about a mile away — an easy walk if you feel like stretching your legs after a day of travel. Along the way you’ll pass colorful buildings, local restaurants, and plenty of little shops that make the walk feel like part of the experience. Of course, if you’d rather save your energy, an Uber will get you there in just a few minutes.

While you’re there, make sure to stop at the iconic Café du Monde. A plate of their famous beignet is practically a New Orleans rite of passage. Just be prepared for a little powdered sugar everywhere — it’s part of the fun.

After an evening soaking in the sights, sounds, and flavors of the city, head back to the hotel and get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow the cruise officially begins.

Embarkation Day

The next morning you’ll meet in the hotel lobby, where motorcoaches are waiting to escort everyone to the ship. Your luggage is handled for you and delivered directly to your stateroom, making the embarkation process smooth and stress-free.

Once onboard, take some time to settle in and explore the ship. It doesn’t take long to get your bearings, and it’s fun to start discovering your favorite spots — whether that’s the lounge, the dining room, or the sun deck.

Later in the afternoon, head up to the sun deck as the ship begins its journey out of New Orleans. Watching the city slowly fade into the distance is a memorable way to begin the cruise.
As the skyline disappears, the scenery shifts into something quite different — an industrial stretch of the Mississippi River that plays a vital role in transporting goods across the country. Massive cargo ships move along the river carrying everything from grain and coal to steel and petroleum. It’s fascinating to see this working side of the river and realize just how important these waterways are beyond tourism.

As evening approaches, it’s time for your first dinner onboard — the perfect moment to relax, reflect on the day, and start looking forward to everything the next few days on the river will bring.

Relax. We've got this.
