Tonight you'll ride on and overnight in one of Ecuador's most famous haciendas, the 400 year old Hacienda La Cienega. This enchanting hacienda on the slopes of Cotopaxi has hosted many of Ecuador's former presidents as well as the founder of modern geography, Alexander von Humboldt.
Day 3: Latacunga, Ambato, Riobamba and Baños
1 Breakfast
Continue traveling to Latacunga today. A small town of indigenous people, Latacunga is most noted for its empanadas, plantains and tostados. A much larger city, it is well developed and known for its fruit and flower production, tanneries, and textiles markets. Continue on to Riobamba, located in the Chambo River Valley of the Andes. This city is a main transportation center in the region. Last finish your journey today in Baños, one of the most charming towns of Ecuador. Considered the gateway to the Amazon river basin, Baños is a land of orchids and waterfalls at the base of the Tungurahua volcano, and its hot therapeutic springs are famous throughout the country. Overnight in Baños.
Enjoy a rest day today. You can enjoy the numerous options that Baños has to offer. 1 Breakfast
Ride again today further south towards Cuenca. Stop en route at Puyo, the commercial capital of the region and border town to the Amazon rainforest located along the Puyo Amazon River. Next continue on to the Macas, another main settlement along the Amazon rainforest boundary. This city has served as a main hub for contact with Amazon indigenous people, including providing the location for the main seats of local government. The city also offers a range of activities to tourists. Continue south to the colonial gem of Cuenca. Here red clay rooftops stretch throughout the city and baroque churches seem to stand on every corner. The rest of the day is free for you to wander and explore Cuenca.
Spend the morning touring Cuenca, a UNESCO world heritage site. You might visit the city's markets and grand churches or head to the Tomebamba River and the old and new Cathedral in this lovely city.
