Beth loves to swim. I’m more of a runner, but I’m willing to indulge. Beth has been to Europe once before and it was for this same swim trip. She loved the trip so much she had to incorporate it into this trip as well. We took a 5 hour bus ride from Athens to Lefkada, there are flights available, but we tend lean more toward budget options. The bus ride was uneventful and allowed us plenty of time to sleep off the remaining jet lag.
Our hotel was nestled on the hillside across the bay with a view of Nidri. That evening we greeted the other swimmers and had our informational meeting.
Our first swim day began with our sorting cap ceremony, where we swim 2 laps around a small boat which determined which group we would be swimming with. The pink caps were worn by the fastest swimmers, orange caps were given to the next group and the group that needed more time were given yellow caps. Naturally, Beth swam with the pink group, I was placed with the yellow group (we quickly decided that we would be referred to as the gold group).
After our morning swim we cruised to a nearby port for lunch after which we swam along an island coast for 2 kilometers (the walk back to our hotel from the Athens bus drop off wasn’t looking that bad at all).
Each day was similarly structured with a morning swim, a lunch break at a different port and then an afternoon swim. Each day we swam an average of 5 kilometers along island coasts or crossing between islands.
On our swims we explored coastal caves, saw a variety of sea life from sea cucumbers to lion fish. One day we were blessed with dolphins playing at the bow of the boat and in its wake.
Being the novice swimmer that I am I did not realize the importance of the various liquids offered while we swam. The guides would offer mouthwash and fresh water or a variety of other drinks. I wasn’t very thirsty, nor did I think my breath was bad, so I would pass on the offerings - big mistake. After my second day my mouth was raw and I had an ulcer on my tongue which made it painful to eat and difficult to talk. The guides coordinated with the hotel to get some medicinal gel to correct my error. After a day of rest my mouth was mostly healed and I felt it was safe to swim again with frequent requests for mouthwash.
In the evening we were free to enjoy the local restaurants at our leisure. Sometimes we would join our new friends and other nights Beth and I would have a private meal on the water. After dinner it wasn’t uncommon to converse late into the evening. One evening the hotel put on a Greek night with local delicacies and entertainment from a local dance troupe. Our final evening our group ate together and celebrated our swimming achievements in a mountainside restaurant.
The next day Beth and I found our way back to Athens to prepare for our next adventures.

The response from Adventure Life to my first inquiry was prompt and promising. I worked with Jamie Broeckel, Trip Planner, via text, email, and phone calls- always extremely responsive and thorough with information and explaining the process to arrange a private tour for me to Malaysia Borneo. Within about week, the booking was complete and I made decisions because of Jamie's great customer service , friendly manner, and overall competence on behalf of the company's travel expertise. Now I have an itinerary, additional Trip Planner Assistants, several links for vital information for traveling to Maylasia, etc. Still many details for Sept. trip, but now the heavy lifting is done and I can enjoy the rest of the anticipation and research!! Thanks Jamie- you are amazing!!!!

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
