Venice Cruise Tips & Travel Guide

Venice Cruise Port Highlights

St Mark Square -
The epicenter of the city is a spectacular site to see and photo opportunities seem endless in every direction. If you want visit highlights such as the Doje's Palace or St Mark's Basilica, where limited tickets and overflowing demand make it important to reserve a ticket ahead of time, so contact your Adventure Life trip planner to make sure it's possible to visit these popular historic attractions.

Take a gondola ride or a walk along the canals

What's more romantic than a gondola ride in Venice? But gondola rides are pricey, so traveling the way the locals do, by walking through the city streets and bridges like Rialto Bridge, taking ferries and water taxis, you will get the full Venice experience as well.

Beyond Venice, your cruise may include these other amazing port cities such as:

  • Rome (Civitavecchia) – the country's capital city and home to the Roman empire's most famous ruins, like the Colosseum and the Forum, just to name a few. Additionally, the Vatican City is home to St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the administrative headquarters of the Catholic Church.
  • Sicily - the Mediterranean's largest island is the off the southern coast of Italy, and home to its own unique culture, cuisine and wines.
  • Sardinia - is a picturesque island with a rugged coastline in the middle of the Mediterranean with almost 2,000km of coastline, sandy beaches and a mountainous interior with ample hiking opportunities. Thousands of nuraghi, mysterious Bronze Age stone ruins shaped like beehives dot the countryside.
  • Naples - here, you can visit the harrowing sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, where artifacts from the violent eruptions of Mt. Vesuvius are well preserved.
When to Visit Venice, Italy
Unlike central Europe which experiences frigid winter temperatures and sweltering summer heat, the Mediterranean city of Venice enjoys more mild temperatures throughout the year, ranging from the low 30s Fahrenheit in the cold winter months to the highs in the low 80s F in the summer.

The summer months are the high season in Venice, so while you will experience warm to hot weather, you will also likely encounter larger crowds during this season, especially at the most popular attractions and sights.

The shoulder season months of May and September-November are great times to visit this Adriatic city, when there are significantly fewer tourists crowding the sites and temperatures are still warm but more comfortable.

The winter months from December through late February are colder and not ideal for cruises, though if you don't mind wearing plenty of layers, this can be a great time to visit Venice to get great deals on hotels and admissions to attractions (as long as you know that some sites may close early during winter).
