Indeed, the surrounding water is known as the Sea of Seven Colors.

Welcome to Bocas del Toro, a captivating Panamanian archipelago with wild beauty to spare. This is one of the most biodiverse pockets of the Caribbean, and it’s home to a natural laboratory for the study of evolution and climate change. It’s also Panama’s first Mission Blue Hope Spot, a program that focuses on the rehabilitation and preservation of the marine ecosystem, which is truly wonderous. Some 95 percent of Caribbean coral species are found in the waters surrounding Bocas del Toro, which means you can expect to see a jaw-dropping variety of tropical reef creatures, including nurse sharks, stingrays, crabs, and lobsters.

On land, numerous races and ethnicities—from its indigenous people to Latino locals—live in harmony amid this dreamy, multicultural archipelago. And together, they create a fascinating cultural melting pot of diverse traditions, food, and music.

Guna Yala, also known as the San Blas Islands, is governed by Panama’s Guna Indigenous People, who work tirelessly to ensure this pocket of paradise is preserved and protected for future generations. The narrow territory is made up of 365 islands, of which only 50 are inhabited by the Guna people; the rest are blissfully uninhabited and untouched.

Today, your Discovery Team will take you on a Zodiac excursion to gain insight into the Guna way of life. Be greeted with local music and dance before interacting with the welcoming locals.

Look out for stalls selling molas, a traditional textile made from layers of colored fabric crafted to form patterns and pictures inspired by Guana's cosmogenic beliefs. These one-of-a-kind souvenirs are as eye-catching as they are intricate.

Your Discovery Team will share with you that the French started construction in 1880, but the project was abandoned and taken over by the United States in 1904 before finally opening a decade later. It is now managed by a Panamanian government authority, using three levels of locks to raise ships to Lake Gatun to avoid the long and treacherous journey rounding Cape Horn.

Around 200 small islands make up the Pearl Islands archipelago in the North Pacific Ocean, in the Gulf of Panama. Discovered in 1503 by the Spanish Conquistadors, the islands are named after the abundance of pearls found in the nutrient-rich waters, while other natural assets include tranquil beaches and eye-popping coral reefs, ideal for diving, snorkeling, and kayaking.

The largest of the islands is Isla Del Rey, followed by the privately owned Isla San José, with a population of 30. In fact, there are more beaches here than there are people, with 50 stretches of sand at last count. There’s also jungle, and lots of it, offering a vast array of flora and fauna across diverse terrain, including gallery forests, coconut palms, wild sugar cane, and occasional arboreal giants.
